Baby and Children Safety Considerations

September 19, 2008

Top tips to protect your baby

Although parents do their level best to keep their babies safe, accidents still happen. It is hard to stay one step ahead of toddlers, but until baby begins to crawl you can at least keep him in a safe place. Making sure you comply with all safety regulations will help with baby safety goals. Car travel is regulated for the safety of babies. They must be kept in an approved, rear-facing baby capsule in the back seat of the car. Toddlers and children should sit in the backseat on an approved seat with a lap-shoulder belt.

Babies should never be left unattended where there is water. They can easily drown in the bath, a bucket or large bowl or water, or the swimming pool. Scalding is a safety issue too. Toddlers are curious and want to explore their world. They will pull things that dangle such as electric cords from the iron, or the edge of the tablecloth. Many toddlers have been scalded by hot coffee. You should never drink a hot beverage while nursing a baby, especially if other children are present as they can jog your elbow.

Plastic bags, or anything with a frayed thread of cotton or even a bib tie can get tangled around a baby’s throat and cause choking or suffocation. And remember that babies and toddlers will put everything they can touch into their mouth.

How Safe Are Your Children?

We live in a dangerous world where anything can happen to your children at any given time. While there is a lot of important information on the internet on child safety, there is very little on the use of child protection products such as alarm backpacks or remote monitors . There is much information on speaking to your children and teaching them to avoid dangerous situations. Simple, a child may confront a dangerous situation and may need that little extra something which will easily bring the attention of bystanders and passer bys.

Every year, 1 in 5 kids experiences a medical emergency that requires a visit to the Emergency Room. Of course, this is not the only way your child can benefit from such protection products. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could be notified every time your child began to wander off in crowded place? For very little cost, electronic leashes can bring peace of mind and drastically reduce your child’s odds of becoming lost or disappearing in crowded places. Can you imagine losing your child for 4 hours!

Choose The Right Clothing For Your Baby

September 18, 2008

It is the responsibility of parents to buy clothing for their newborn child, especially since clothing is one of the most important essentials for sensitive skin of babies. However, baby clothes are most likely given by friends and family members to welcome the newborn child.

First in mind when buying clothing for a child is safety. Reliable clothing should clearly display good quality of materials on the label itself – most child’s clothing like crib beddings and other layettes today are flame retardant, ordered by law. Baby clothes with such cords are easily reached by toddlers, thus can cause pain and wound round for them.

As far as good quality of clothing is concerned, babies should feel the softness and comfortability of layettes. Clothing like one-piece, baby shirts, crib beddings, socks, hats and other layettes can be very expensive. Popular trends nowadays are personalized baby stuff, from toys and furniture to baby clothing. The design of clothing may vary from different themes. If you happen to have a pretty baby girl, you may choose clothings with the color scheme of pink, or make it personalized by scripting your child’s initials on the fabric. And for those savvy gift givers, still personalized baby gifts can make a lovely welcome present for the child. You may also consider giving baby gift basket filled with baby products and supplies – that include soft and comfy clothing and layettes of course. You can have these gift ideas ordered from online stores or at your local specialty stores.

Choose The Right Clothing For Your Child

Today, there are many fabrics that can be chosen in clothing for children. Clothing may be either natural or synthetic. For children, clothing made from natural materials is a great choice.

Most clothing that is made from natural fibers or fabrics will have a woven appearance. Most synthetic fabrics can be identified by their cut edges. Natural fabrics fray when cut. Synthetic materials are added to natural fibers to create a synthetic blend material.

The difference between natural fibers and fabrics is simple. Natural fibers are the threads that are woven to create a fabric. One type of natural fiber may be used to create different styles of fabrics.

For children, the best fiber sources are vegetable and animal based. The different fibers that are used to create vegetable or animal source fabrics include cotton, flax or linen, hemp, jute, ramie, silk, sisal and wool fabric types. Fur products are processed animal skin with the fur still on the skin. The different types of fabrics manufactured from natural fibers include broadcloth, jean type material, chino, camoflage, shirting, specialty dress fabrics, knit fabrics, velvet, velveteen, corduroy, satin, brocade and tapestry. Many specialty fabrics with a variety of qualities can be created from natural fabrics.

Natural fabrics can be further categorized as vegan or non-vegan. If you want to use only vegetable based fabrics, avoid any animal based materials and fibers.

Natural fabrics will help to regulate the body’s temperature. Unless synthetic fibers are blended with natural fibers in a woven fabric, synthetic fabrics generally trap heat and moisture next to the body, which is uncomfortable. In cold weather, synthetic fabrics are not as warm as natural fabrics. Natural fabrics have a hardy quality because of the woven, matted or knitted method of manufacture. Natural fibers can keep a child comfortable under different weather conditions and temperatures.

Babies: Breastfeeding

When it comes to nutrition, the best first food for babies is breast milk. Experts recommend that babies be breast-fed for six to 12 months. The only acceptable alternative to breast milk is infant formula. Solid foods can be introduced when the baby is 4 to 6 months old, but a baby should drink breast milk or formula, not cow’s milk, for a full year. Cow’s milk contains a different type of protein than breast milk. Bottle-fed infants tend to be fatter than breast-fed infants, but not necessarily healthier.

Human milk contains at least 100 ingredients not found in formula. No babies are allergic to their mother’s milk, although they may have a reaction to something the mother eats. Sucking at the breast promotes good jaw development as well. It’s harder work to get milk out of a breast than a bottle, and the exercise strengthens the jaws and encourages the growth of straight, healthy teeth. The baby at the breast also can control the flow of milk by sucking and stopping. With a bottle, the baby must constantly suck or react to the pressure of the nipple placed in the mouth.

Initially, a breast-fed baby will need to be fed 8-12 times in a 24-hour period, especially since both baby and mother are getting used to the process. Breast milk is more quickly digested than formula, which is another reason why more frequent feeding is necessary. Another reason for the constant suckling at the breast is to stimulate the mammary glands to produce more milk for the baby’s growing appetite. But the extra time spent feeding the baby that first year is well worth it as breast milk passes along the mother’s immunities and delivers the highest-quality nutrition for a developing baby.

Besides being the optimal source of nutrition for your baby in her first year, nursing has obvious psychological benefits for both mother and baby. At birth, infants see only 12 to 15 inches, the distance between a nursing baby and its mother’s face. Studies have found that infants as young as 1 week prefer the smell of their own mother’s milk.

Many psychologists believe the nursing baby enjoys a sense of security from the warmth and presence of the mother, especially when there’s skin-to-skin contact during feeding. Parents of bottle-fed babies may be tempted to prop bottles in the baby’s mouth, with no human contact during feeding. But a nursing mother must cuddle her infant closely many times during the day. Nursing becomes more than a way to feed a baby; it’s a source of warmth and comfort.

When the baby is being fed and nurtured in this way, it’s natural for her to fall asleep quickly. You can easily rouse her with a little tickle of the feet. Breast-feeding is good for new mothers as well as for their babies. There are no bottles to sterilize and no formula to buy, measure and mix. It may be easier for a nursing mother to lose the pounds of pregnancy as well, since nursing uses up extra calories. A nursing mother is forced to get needed rest. Nursing at night is easy as well.

Caring for your Baby after Vaccinations

Nobody likes getting shots when they go to the doctor. Sometimes a baby will have a mild reaction to a vaccination, and might have trouble sleeping as a result. You can help decrease your baby’s discomfort by making sure he’s comfortable and well-rested when visiting the doctor’s office and you can use home treatments to help relieve some of the more common minor reactions to vaccinations.

If your child develops a slight fever, try giving him acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil). This can help reduce a fever and alleviate any pain felt in the location of the shot. Remember to never give aspirin to your baby because of the risk of Reye’s Syndrome. The injection site might also become red and swollen. A cool compress or ice pack applied to the site for approximately 10 to 20 minutes can also provide relief. A mild skin rash might develop 7 to 14 days following the injection, particularly with the chickenpox or measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

You might find your baby is more fretful and restless and refuse to eat following a vaccination. Keeping the house and the room baby sleeps in at a comfortable temperature will also help, as he’s more likely to be fussy and restless if he’s too warm. Try to keep in mind that if your baby does become a bit restless in the night that the discomfort is only temporary, and he’s most likely to get right back on track with his sleeping and eating schedule soon.

Menjelang Persalinan

July 24, 2008

Jika anda masih kebingungan mencari nama untuk calon buah hati tercinta, artikel saya sebelumnya yang berjudul "Name for your Baby" mungkin perlu anda tinjau kembali.

2.  Mulai siapkan keperluan untuk bayi anda kelak. Buat daftar keperluan bayi, dan jika anda mempunyai waktu luang, manfaatkan untuk berbelanja keperluan bayi. Mitos tentang Kehamilan

June 3, 2008

3 Puting berwarna gelap berarti bayi laki-laki.  Salah.

5 Makan durian menyebabkan gangguan kehamilan. Salah.

6 Minum susu ibu hamil menyebabkan bayi besar. Salah.
